1 Cultural Awareness: a General Overview


In the intercultural contexts people not only interact on the linguistic and extralinguistic level, but unwittingly negotiate the ‘frames’ belonging to theirs culture of reference.

There are some ‘communicative barriers’ that originate from the cultural values underlying the communication between Italian and stranger interlocutors.

The cultural background could act as communicative filter because it is internalized in the minds of the speakers in an unconscious way.

2 How to be a culturally competent Nurse


This video is specifically dedicated to care-workers and their cultural competence/incompetence. In fact, across a set of short nursing situations, video shows what would be good or bad to say to the other in-need-person. Caregiver can fall in wrong if he or she is not so aware of own or other’s culture. Furthermore, it suggests practical tips for a comfortable care relationship.

3 Culturally Competent Care


Care-workers can improve cultural competency as they heighten awareness of cultural differences, personal biases, and healthcare disparities. Cross-cultural communication education equips care-workers with right skills to better build in effective and meaningful cross-cultural interactions.

Video shows a set of emblematic sentences said by important personalities, in order to point out the main aspects to go over the cultural barriers and respect the human being.

The article underlines cross-cultural variations exist within cultures. It briefly explains strategies that you can use in working with patients from different cultures. There is a specific focus on different cultures (Asian, American, Russian, etc.).

Furthermore, there is a display with a list of useful strategies in order to improve the quality of work in intercultural settings. Some of specific and interesting tips are listed. For example, the article suggests to learn about the cultural traditions of the patients you care for, or to pay close attention to non-verbal language.

In un contesto interculturale, le persone non solo interagiscono a livello linguistico ed extralinguistico, ma dovrebbero anche negoziare la cornice culturale entro la quale il loro agire è inserito.

Occorre prendere coscienza che l’appartenenza culturale può rappresentare barriere comunicative nell’incontro con l’altro. La presa di coscienza è già un primo importante passo per l’acquisizione della consapevolezza culturale.
