2 Cultural Stereotypes

Description

Video is composed of two parts: in the former, a set of students from all the world show the main stereotype about group one belongs to; in the latter, the same students can say what they are actually. Of course, what each student says on him or herself is much more than the stereotype.

Everyone craves to be recognized as individual not only as an interchangeable member of a cultural group.

This is true for all people around the world and at every stage of life.

Video (3’ 20”) English The participants should feel asked to compare their own cultural stereotyping with shown ones in the video. They should reflect on this. Furthermore, they could compare their own stereotypes with the other participants’ ones.

Description

The picture shows two different kind of getting older. It is useful to reflect on stereotypes on elderly people and to stop the ageism. In fact, each person gets older in different way, and ageing is not a hill at all.

4 Cultures and Stereotypes-Awareness of Cultural Stereotyping and how to avoid it

Description

The resource explains the key contents of stereotyping. It consists of contents and imagines too that lead learners to catch the deep meaning of the concepts intuitively. It shows the different role of stereotypes, the good and the bad ones, and lists a set of the main stereotypes. For example, gender and age- related stereotypes.

Furthermore, it focuses on the care-worker, just to point out the importance of cultural self-awareness in the field of care, just to improve the quality of both relationship and health outcomes.

5 Cultural Diversity Examples-avoid Stereotypes while communicating

Description

The short-video is quite funny and it is focused on the racial stereotyping.

The resource concerns the stereotypes we make when we meet other people. We use them almost automatically and we often are not good at recognizing when we get wrong.

Although we think of being right, although our intention are good, we make mistakes when we approach the other without concern on him or her.

Description

Some stereotypes are pervasive and they are automatically activated. Thus, reflecting on this individual represents a key factor to both get more awareness of one’s own stereotypes and avoid cultural stereotyping.

8 Cultural Competency Vignette – Cultural Stereotyping

Description

This video contains dramatized content used for educational purposes. It regards a situation between a therapist and a patient who has oriental traits. The therapist confuses Chinese culture with the Japanese one as her questions to the man show. Her speech is full of cultural stereotypes on Eastern culture. The patient is quite relaxed, but, at a certain time he explains briefly but resolutely the mistake to the therapist.
